ITIL V3 Frequently asked questions

Q. I am already certified at ITIL Foundation level (or Practitioner or Service Managers). Will I need to undertake the certification again on ITIL v3?

A The OGC (Office of Government Commerce) has already confirmed that existing ITIL qualifications will not be invalidated by the changes to ITIL because the core principles will not change. Therefore any course or certification undertaken prior to or during this transition period will remain relevant and will be recognized in the new structure. U pgrading your knowledge on the new ITIL is a choice, not a requirement.

For updating your knowledge and skills on ITIL v3, you can take-up the QAI “ITIL refresh” courses available from mid June 2007.

Q. When will the new exams be available?
A. New exams at Foundation level shall be available by mid June 2007. QAI is launching ITIL v3 foundation course on 14 th Jun 2007. The exam for higher level of certification however, will probably not be available before early 2008.

Q. Should I wait until ITIL V3 Service Managers certification is launched so I am trained on the latest version?
A. The processes covered in V2 are still going to be in V3. The main difference is that they are going to be clearer and the relationships between them will be better defined. A good V2 training course will cover all the aspects that you will need for successful implementation of IT Service Management. In addition, QAI V2 Service Manager course incorporate a short ITIL V3 primer to help introduce students to what is contained in ITIL V3.

Q. What if some of the people in my organization have been certified on ITIL V2? Should everyone get certified on ITIL V3 so we are consistent in our communication?
A. This will not really be necessary as there are no significant changes in terminology. People should take the training at whatever time is appropriate for them to support their specific needs/initiative. For those who have taken ITIL V2 training and want to learn the specific changes made in ITIL V3, a short “ITIL refresh” course is available from QAI India beginning June 2007.

Q. Is there an “upgrade course” available to help me understand the differences between ITIL V2 and ITIL V3?
A. If you have been certified under V2 there is an “ITIL refresh” course of short duration available from QAI India to ensure that you have the latest information. However, those who have not attended any ITIL training should attend the new ITIL Foundation course available from mid Jun 2007.

Q. If I took ITIL Foundation training under V2, will I be able to pass the exam under V3?
A. That should not be necessary for most people as the syllabus for the two exams is different. People who need to do a re-sit between V2/V3 may be successful simply via additional self study, or they may wish to attend an “ITIL refresh” described in question above.

Q. What is the new qualifications scheme?
A. The new Foundation qualification is being launched by mid June 2007. This is a three-day course covering the content of all five books. In essence, the course will cover more process and general material, similar to the COBIT Foundations course. The Practitioner courses will be similar to those currently available; however they will be classified into two streams: Technical and Business. The Technical stream will refer to the process specific Practitioner qualifications very much as we already have. The Business stream will focus upon some of the other processes introduced in v3, such as those within service strategies, business relationship management and supplier management. These practitioner courses will focus upon the business skills and activities required for successful IT Service Management.

Q. With the changes going on with ITIL and OGC, who is responsible for creating the new exams?
A. The APM Group now has contractual responsibility for ITIL and they will lead the team working on the new exams. A senior examination panel has been created to make recommendations on the format, structure and content of the new exams. This work will commence around November 2006.
