There is an annual increase of over 50 percent per annum in comparison with 10- 12 percent of software services (Nasscom) resulting in testing being one of the fastest growing segments in software industry.
- Worldwide Market for testing services is forecast to grow at US $13 billion by 2010 (Gartner)
While the above statistics re-enforce the fact that independent testing services have matured to a great degree since its emergence in the last decade, they also bring to light the growing concern of fulfilling the need and scaling up to meet the ever rising demand.
According to Nasscom, there was a shortfall of 15,000 software testing professionals in India in 2006. According to Gartner, the market opportunity for the Indian offshore software testing companies is currently $2 billion and estimated to rise to $8 billion by 2008. The inability to meet the current demand coupled with forecasted increase in demand call for innovative ways in which resource supply need to be adapted to be able to meet the demand.
Going back to basics of software testing, Testing is a business activity that is facilitated by IT. The process of validation is to ensure that the product works in conjunction with what the business does and for this requires understanding of the business as primary criteria. The advent of new types of testing like usability testing which fundamentally shift the focus from validating if a given input produces the required output, to thinking in terms of users and the ease of usage of the product. The need for functional understanding
coupled with advent of new types of testing provides an opportunity to view testing as an activity not requiring programming skill to a great degree and hence could be accomplished with professionals with fundamental programming skills and need not be the ones with transitional IT background. This white paper provides more insight into the solution to meet the raising demand of testing professionals through usage of professionals with non-IT background. It also examines the pre-requisites, approach, challenges and risks with the approach.
The intent of this paper is to help organizations reduce the supply demand gap, provide a more cost effective solution to the ever active demand of CIO’s to produce more for less and to provide a more stable resource solution that drives down attrition.
