"We put an emphasis on building automated tests so that we can let people do what people are good at, and have computers do what computers are good at. That doesn't mean that we never do manual testing, but instead that we do the "right" amount of manual testing with more human-oriented focus (e.g. exploratory testing), and we try to ensure that we never do repetitive manual testing." - (Reference: Wes Maldonado: Data Junkie) Conventionally, the use of automation is restricted to regression testing, and in some cases the smoke / sanity testing. The main drivers behind automation are - To reduce the effort spent on testing repeated tasks - To guarantee accuracy - To save cost on testing the application / product - To increase test coverage without impacting quality of the deliverables and the timelines.
This paper aims at exploring areas other than the conventional ones where automation could provide all the benefits that one expects from automating the regression tests. The paper broadly focuses on the following areas where automation can prove to be very beneficial:
1. Automation in RAD environment
2. Data Generation
3. Data comparison
4. Automating Production workflows
5. Utilities The paper presents a few case studies highlighting the benefits of automation in the above-mentioned areas.
