Can the technical quality of our systems go up, while customer satisfaction goes down? Yes, unless we also test from the perspective of the customer. This tutorial presents a practical approach to focusing existing test methods from the viewpoint of the customer. Both white box and black box test methods focus on technical aspects of systems, and aim to remove defects (defined in technical terms). This is fine, but we must supplement these approaches with a customer-centric method: "gold box" testing -- a set of techniques to align test effort (and results) with customer satisfaction. This extension of the V model allows us to even detect missing requirements, and focus test effort where it matters most for the customer. We need to able to test code, design, and even requirements against customer satisfaction. This is especially important for rapid development, fast-track, and agile development projects. Without understanding precisely what is most important to the customer (and why), it is easy to put great efforts into testing that have no effect on the satisfaction of customers with the final system. Gold Box testing addresses this problem directly by applying Blitz QFD (Quality Function Deployment) to software testing situations. The aim is to assure the development of systems that satisfy customers. |
