10 Golden Goblets for ITIL® v3 Early Adopters - Decision Drivers and Self-Assessment
Gautam Nadkarni, ITSM Consultant, Infosys Technologies

This paper is based on the author's experience of leading one of the first ITIL® v3 assessments in the world conducted for a large telecom organization based in Europe. The paper is targeted at the ITSM community in general who are on the threshold of making a decision on ITIL® v3 adoption and possible ways to move ahead. The first 5 golden goblets are sequential questions on parameters of organization context and internal factors such as organization size, state of flux, ITIL® adoption status, etc.

The answers to these questions will help in clarifying whether the organization needs ITIL® v3 and is ready for an ITIL® v3 adoption. The later 5 golden goblets are component categories such as roles, functions, artifacts, concepts, etc. which are ITIL® v3 essentials. These categories contain components defined in the ITIL® v3 books and need to be verified if they exist or not within the ITSM organization. This will help organizations in doing a rapid check of their organization with respect to ITIL® v3 and understand the basic level of alignment with ITIL® v3.

This paper comes at an appropriate juncture when ITIL® v3 has just been released and the ITSM masses as well as management are looking for high-level understanding of new concepts and changes in ITIL® v3. The paper will help highlight the key and summary considerations which managers of any ITIL® v3 aspiring organization should take into account as well as provide insights into expected components for ITIL® v3.
