An
Integrated Estimation Model for FTE Estimation of
Software Application Maintenance

Estimating Full Time Equivalent (FTE)
for application maintenance outsourcing project has
traditionally been a challenge. There is no industry
accepted model available to estimate FTE for maintenance
projects.
Cognizant has evolved a holistic model
based on two pronged approach to come up with optimal
FTE estimate, starting bottom up based on application
details, current pipeline details, outstanding issues,
service level requirements & integrating this
information with the historical performance on bug
arrival and service capability of bugs and enhancements.
Since this estimation model is a combination of two
different approaches, even if the data is available
only from a single source viz. Application details
or historical performance, the estimation can be carried
out. This proven statistical model has helped Cognizant
to predict bug arrival pattern and carry out accurate
FTE estimation for application maintenance. The paper
details FTE estimation model for production support,
bug fix and enhancements.
This model helps to carry out accurate
estimation of overall FTEs for a new maintenance project
as well as aids in estimating FTE to maintain separate
team for production support, bugfix and enhancements.

G.N.Dharmendraraj |
Dharmendraraj
has over 10 years experience in core quality assurance
in both manufacturing and software. He has implemented
various standards and models like ISO 9000, QS 9000,
CMM and CMMi models in well reputed organizations.
He is a Certified Six Sigma Black Belt by Breakthrough
Management Group. Dharmendraraj has been associated
with Cognizant since 2002 and his current assignments
include:
- Implementing Six Sigma across practices
- Managing Metrics and Estimation council activities
- Managing organization wide metrics analysis
- Defining and implementing new metrics and estimation
model
Dharmendraraj has a Master degree
in Mathematics from Vivekananda college, Chennai,
and a post graduation in Quality Management from Anna
University

| Meet
Dhanakoti Ramesh |
|
Ramesh has over 12 years
experience in the IT industry and is currently working
in Cognizant’s Insurance practice (P&C). Based
in Chennai, Ramesh leads the offshore delivery for all
projects for P&C Insurance customer. He has handled
large consolidation, re-engineering and maintenance
projects for large P&C and Life customers in the
last 7 years of experience. He has extensive experience
in all the process areas of Property & Casualty
insurance.
Ramesh manages a team of project mangers and his role
includes delivery management, building & maintaining
customer relationship teams and is also responsible
for building the Property and Casualty domain competency.
Prior
to joining Cognizant, Ramesh was with Tata Consultancy
Services. There, he was involved in development, migration
and maintenance projects involving Mainframe and Client
server technologies. Ramesh has a Masters in Electrical
Engineering from College of Engineering, Guindy and
Bachelors degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering
from Govt. College of Engineering, Salem.

M. Hariharan |
Hariharan
has over 16 years experience in core quality assurance and continuous
process improvement activities consisting of both software and
systems engineering. His functional role involves interpreting
and implementing quality management system, confirming to quality
concepts & quality models, carry out metric analysis to
drive process improvement and exhibit leadership qualities in
institutionalization of quality culture in the organization.
Hariharan has been associated with Cognizant since 2002 and
his current assignments include:
- Managing process facilitation and implementation to key Line
of Business
- Managing strategic process improvement initiatives
- Managing organization wide metrics analysis
- Managing process consultancy assignments
- Managing process integration of new organization units / solution
offerings
He has participated several
times in formal CMM / CMMI / PCMM assessments as Assessment
Team Member (ATM) and contributed significantly in identifying
continuous process improvement opportunities. He has played
key role in repeatedly driving organizations to achieve high
process maturity status complying with the requirements of
ISO9001, Software CMM, CMM Integrated, People CMM, BS7799,
QS 9000, TQM and TPM.
He is a Certified Six Sigma
Black Belt by Breakthrough Management Group. Hariharan has
a bachelor’s degree in engineering from Regional Engineering
College in Durgapur, West Bengal, India, and a master’s
in software systems from the reputable Birla Institute of
Technology and Science, Pilani, India.
He has presented over 20 technical papers in various technical
journals, international and national conferences
