Estimation
for Enhancements in Large Product Releases
K. Naresh, Chetana P Shanbhag,

Estimation for
Large Product enhancements considers Enhancement Function
point count and Productivity, however the productivity
factors of Large Product maintenance differs from
those of normal software development and maintenance
because they are related to the complexity of current
functionality (both in terms of domain and technical
implementation), nature of the proposed changes, impact
of the proposed change within and outside the domain/module,
expertise of the team and many other factors. Therefore,
the various characteristics that have
an influence on software maintenance productivity
should be refined.
The model put in practice builds a wrapper
around the enhancement FP count by introducing “Enhancement
Complexity factor (ECF)” that captures the inherent
complexity of the product and protects the productivity,
which is dependent on common variation such as standard
team expertise and typical maintenance environment
that are trite in any Product Organization.
Using the model, we have achieved a significant improvement
in the estimation accuracy by over 25%. The “Complexity
factor” captured has helped us to baseline domain
or module wise complexity, aiding us in tracking and
reducing the complexity of the product over a period
of time.
