Enhanced Estimation Model Integrating Function Points Method and Clean Room Process

Seetharaman Swaminathan, Alcatel

One of the essential aspects to be known when committing to deliver a software project is a reasonably accurate estimate of the resources required at earlier stages of the project life cycle, and, at the same time, not expending too much effort in arriving at such an estimate.
The Cleanroom Model of Software Engineering is increasingly used to provide high-quality software complying with the customer requirements, while also meeting cost and lead-time constraints.

This session provides insight into how a reasonably accurate estimate of the required resources can be arrived at with the minimum amount of overhead by using the Cleanroom Model (as well as modified versions of it) in conjunction with the Function Points method. The highlight of this model is that it can be used also in projects/organizations where the Cleanroom Model is not fully employed, thus leading to a more global acceptance of this model. In such cases, the basic principles of the Functional Specification method of the Cleanroom model needs to be applied during the requirement analysis and estimation process.
