What is PRINCE2TM?

PRINCE2TM is the structured project management method from the Office of Government Commerce (OGC), UK that has become de facto standard for organizing, managing and controlling projects. Prince2TM offers a best-practice approach for the management of diverse projects. PRINCE2TMis covered in the reference manual ‘Managing Successful Projects with PRINCE2TM’ published by the OGC.


PRINCE TM stands for ‘Projects IN Controlled Environment’, and is a process based Project Management method, covering the organization, management and control of the Projects.

The APM Group (APMG) in UK is the Prince2TM Certification Body and is responsible for the running of examinations and accreditation of training organizations (ATOs), trainers, consulting organizations (ACOs) and consultants, on behalf of the OGC.

The PRINCE2TM method is flexible and adaptable for any type and size of project, and it offers an excellent management foundation for any member of staff; no prior Project Management knowledge is necessary .

Prince2TM is applicable both for IT and Non-IT projects.

FOUNDATION LEVEL

This is the first qualification that is required to become a PRINCE2TM Practitioner. This level is aimed at enabling the candidate to act as an informed member of the team using the PRINCE2TM method. For this they need to show that they understand the principles and terminologies of the method.

The Foundation Exam Format is of 75 multiple-choice questions (Closed book) of one-hour duration. 38 correct answers are required to pass.

Candidates are to pass the foundation exam before proceeding to the practitioner level .

PRACTITIONER LEVEL

This aims to measure whether the candidate is able to apply PRINCE2TM methods to the running and managing of a project. The candidate needs to show that they are able to tune PRINCE2TM to different project circumstances and understand the relationship between processes, components and techniques.

The Practitioner Exam is a “Scenario based” three questions examination lasting three hours. This is an open – book format and 75 out of 150 marks is required to pass.

Pre-course Reading
  • Access to web-based pre-course material is provided to the participants.
  • It covers the differences between line management and project management followed by an overview of the PRINCE2TM method. Self-test material is included in the Pre-course reading.

Course Structure

The course is a mixture of input and practical sessions, delivered by an APM Group Approved Trainer with practical experience of PRINCE2TM. Practical sessions will be on an individual and team basis focusing on the Foundation and Practitioner Examination .

Formal training lasts for five days with home study and revision exercises. Detailed training material is provided since the PRINCE2TM manual is intended as a reference book and does not by itself provide a sound basis for studying the method. There is an integrated case study to provide a firm basis for discussion and understanding of the method.
